Alonso Leads First Session at Singapore

Marina Bay Street Circuit

Race weekend includes the race kicking off at 13:00 BST on Sunday.

Real-time coverage provided on digital platforms and official website.

Practice Session Highlights

Aston Martin's Spanish veteran was fastest ahead of Scuderia star and reigning champion in first practice at the street circuit event.

McLaren's drivers Australian rookie and Lando Norris finished the session in fifth and sixth.

The young Australian was a notable margin quicker than Norris.

The experienced Spaniard was 0.150secs in front of the Ferrari driver and over a quarter of a second clear than the Red Bull star.

Ferrari's seven-time champion was fourth fastest.

Car Performance

It is not expected that Aston Martin will be contenders for P1.

Nonetheless, the squad are hopeful of a strong showing on a technical venue that is ideally suited to their vehicle, which performs better when plenty of aerodynamic grip are needed.

Double world title winner Alonso is also famous as a Singapore specialist, and often shines on the Marina Bay street track.

But he was likely running a lighter load or a higher engine mode than his opponents, or both, to post the fastest lap.

Session Details

His team-mate Canadian racer was 1.918secs behind in P18.

He had issues with his seat during the initial runs and was also running new components.

FP1 in Marina Bay is not reflective of later performance under lights as it is held in daylight in the daytime, while the shootout and the race are run at night.

Points Situation

The McLaren driver leads Norris by a quarter-century with remaining rounds left entering the Grand Prix in the Lion City.

The Woking-based team are in position to clinch the constructors' championship on the weekend.

The only way they can fail to secure it in this race is if Mercedes surpass them by thirty-one or Ferrari do so by thirty-five.

Competitor Outlook

Red Bull are optimistic of a strong result after Verstappen's victories in Italy and Azerbaijan preceding this weekend.

It was a relief when light rain falling ahead of FP1 cleared by the time the vehicles took to the track on a circuit that had remained dry.

Senior figure Helmut Marko said before the session that they wanted a uninterrupted running to get underway on understanding their car configuration for the Grand Prix.
