{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with F1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third rotation when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to replace his damaged front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track marshals can be authorized to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was informed that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, track officials were alerted and made ready to access the circuit and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy personnel were rescinded and a caution signal was shown in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired after that point"
