The Monarch Formally Removes Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity
In a decisive move, King Charles has formally removed the former Duke of York of his HRH style and his princely title.
The changes were made official by publishing royal documents under the official state seal, which were recorded in the Gazette.
The official notice declared: “The king has been graciously inclined by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall no longer be entitled to possess the designation of ‘HRH’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince of the realm’.”
A separate record confirmed the removal of the dukedom from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.
The notice stated: “The king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his secretary of state to ensure the Duke of York to be removed from the peerage roll.”
Context of the Decision
This move comes after increasing controversy over Andrew's links to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.
The author claimed that she was sexually abused by the former prince after being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, claims that Mountbatten Windsor has always denied.
Mechanism of Removing Titles
The king utilized his royal prerogative—accepted authorities held by the monarch—following discussions with Cabinet Office officials, rather than through legislative action.
Royal instruments and warrants are tools of this authority, used to bestow or remove honors and styles.
Since the HRH style is conferred by letters patent, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.
Further Measures and Backing
After the initial announcement, the lord chancellor was directed to prepare the necessary documents for the title removals.
The decision also involves Mountbatten Windsor relinquishing his tenancy on Royal Lodge, a 30-room Crown Estate property where he has resided for two decades.
The government fully supported the monarch's move.
Retained Honor
In spite of the loss of titles, it was announced that Andrew will keep his Falklands service medal, awarded for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
