The UK government has added 11 further countries to its public warning list concerning the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Only recently, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, following a number of high-profile cases like the tragic loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol commonly utilized in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for human consumption.

Although it is generated during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Authorities' Advice for Travellers

Government official a senior official stated that each tourist should be aware of the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, stick to well-known venues and avoid local brews or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.

"Should anything feels off, for example a hangover that's far more intense than typical or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The entire list of destinations listed as posing a risk of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
